Mpox Outbreak in Africa: Deadlier Strain on the Rise
Clade 1 Virus Kills 3% of Infected in DRC
A new strain of mpox, known as clade 1, is causing concern in Africa. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), clade 1 has killed about 3% of those infected in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the past year.
Spread to Multiple Countries
The deadlier strain of mpox has spread beyond the DRC to other African countries, including Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Ghana, and Nigeria. As of November 2023, there have been over 37,583 cases and 1,451 deaths reported in 15 African countries.
